Sage AR Automation: What It Covers and Where It Stops

See what Sage AR Automation covers, what Sage says it costs, and 10 questions to ask in a demo before you buy. Includes a break-even example for credit teams.

Sage AR Automation is Sage's accounts receivable software for collections and invoice payments, aimed at companies that send a high volume of invoices. Sage's product page lists payment reminders, collections cadences, online payments, a customer portal, cash application, dispute tracking, and a credit score, and says it connects to more than 40 ERPs.

Disclosure: Credit Pulse sells credit risk software that works alongside AR tools. Everything below about Sage comes from Sage's own product page, checked in November 2026.

What Does Sage AR Automation Do?

Sage AR Automation moves the repetitive parts of receivables work into software: it sends invoices and reminders, runs collections cadences, takes payments, and applies them to open invoices. Sage describes the goal as helping teams "automate collections" while keeping control of the process.

AreaWhat Sage's page lists
InvoicingInvoice presentment, so customers see what is due and when
CollectionsAutomatic payment reminders, customizable multi-channel cadences, task lists that update as payments arrive
Risk flagsHigh-risk accounts flagged using third-party credit checks and a proprietary dynamic credit score
PaymentsCredit card, debit, and ACH acceptance, payment scheduling, multi-currency support, optional card surcharging
PortalsA customer payment portal that syncs with the ERP, plus a supplier portal
Cash applicationOnline payment cash application
Disputes and reportingDispute logging and categorization, aging reports, a four-factor cash flow projection

Which ERPs Does Sage AR Automation Work With?

Sage's page says the product connects to over 40 ERPs, naming Sage Intacct, X3, Sage 100, and Microsoft Dynamics. The FAQ on the same page names Sage Intacct, X3, 300, and 100. If you run a different Sage product, ask Sage to confirm the connector in writing before you plan around it.

How Much Does Sage AR Automation Cost?

Sage prices the product in three tiers, Essentials, Standard, and Pro, with add-ons and custom quotes. Its FAQ states that most customers pay between $10,000 and $25,000 annually, plus any applicable payment processor fees.

A break-even example

This is an illustration with assumed numbers, not a promise of results. Say a distributor has $20 million in annual credit sales, pays $18,000 a year for the software, and carries receivables at an 8 percent cost of capital. One day of sales is about $54,800 ($20,000,000 divided by 365). If automation cuts DSO by 5 days, it frees about $274,000 in cash ($54,800 times 5). At 8 percent, that cash is worth about $21,900 a year, which covers the $18,000 fee with a small margin.

Run the same math with your own sales, fee quote, and a DSO improvement you can defend. If the break-even needs a 15-day improvement, the case is weak. Use the DSO formula guide to set your baseline first.

What Does AR Automation Leave to the Credit Team?

Reminders, cadences, payment links, and cash application are execution work. They help you collect what is owed faster. They do not decide who should get credit, how much, or when a customer's finances have changed enough to stop shipping.

Sage's page says the product flags high-risk accounts using third-party credit checks and a dynamic credit score. That is a useful signal. Whether it replaces a credit policy, approval limits, and ongoing monitoring depends on how often the score refreshes and what happens when it moves. Those are questions for the demo.

In our view, much of what is sold as AR automation is a scheduler for batch emails. The full loop is intake, a credit decision, continuous monitoring, and escalation that adjusts to the customer's financial trajectory instead of its aging bucket. The guide to how AR automation works walks through each stage.

10 Questions to Ask in a Sage AR Automation Demo

  1. Which exact ERP and version will we connect, and who maintains the connector?
  2. Which fields write back to the ERP, and how often does the sync run?
  3. How often does the dynamic credit score refresh for an existing customer?
  4. What happens in the product when a score drops? Does it alert a person, pause a cadence, or change a credit limit?
  5. Can a collections cadence pause automatically when a dispute is logged?
  6. Can we set different cadences by customer tier, balance, and risk score?
  7. How are partial payments and payments covering several invoices applied?
  8. Which third-party credit checks are included, and which cost extra?
  9. What are the payment processor fees, and who sets the surcharge rules?
  10. What does implementation take in weeks, and what do we have to provide?

When Is Sage AR Automation the Right Fit?

It fits a team on one of the ERPs Sage names that sends many invoices, collects mostly by email and portal, and wants payments and reminders in one place. For that team, the main cost is the fee and the implementation effort, and the main benefit is time back from manual follow-up.

It is a thinner fit if your biggest losses come from customers whose finances deteriorate between reviews. That risk lives upstream of the invoice. Credit Pulse covers that layer with research agents that watch customers continuously and surface both risk and room to grow a limit. Teams pair it with the AR tool they already run. See credit management software for how the pieces fit, and the AR automation software guide for a buyer's checklist.
